Due to budget limitations, Equihab cannot always accept every single horse directly. Equihab operates under “no kill shelter” guidelines, i.e. horses aren’t put down to ‘make room’. The acceptance criteria for an incoming horses is selecting those in most immediate danger (severe cruelty/neglect, animal control seizure, healthy horse about to be killed unnecessarily, immediate danger of abandonment, etc).
However, Equihab is committed to helping every horse possible:

This horse was transported to safety by Equihab and placed directly back with a former owner who was outraged a horse she sold was starving to death. She will never be sold again! Equihab's trailer & volunteers made whisking her to safety possible.
INDIRECT HORSE RE=HOMING
However, even if an owner-surrendered horse must be put on the Waiting List to come in, Equihab still provides assistance:
- horse information kept on file. If someone looking for a horse may be a good match, the current owner will be connected with potential home.
- networking with other rescue organizations and individuals to connect horses with potential homes.
- placing an ad for the owner, when appropriate, of horses through Equihab information outlets such as Equihab’s Facebook page or Equihab’s Twitter feed.
- free use of Equihab’s Adopt-a-horse email list to advertise
- free consulting in how to promote the horse for faster sale. Some people simply don’t know where to advertise, what price range to choose, or how to screen.
- assistance in transportation: for example, the current owner found a great new home for the horse, but neither party owns a horse trailer.
- help in locating the services they need to make their horse ready to market: vet, farrier, training, locating tack, photography, grooming help, and anything else the horse needs to look his best.
RETIREES
Equihab also consults with owners who have a horse who needs to be retired: finding retirement farms, deciding on non-profit vs boarding for retirees, and special needs relating to a horse with major soundness issues.
LONG-TERM PLANNING
As part of Equihab’s educational services to horse owners, topics such as long-term planning for equine retirement or for owner change-of-life are discussed. Owners are reminded to consider what would happen to their horses if they were suddenly disabled and unable to care for the horses.
Owners should also include in their Will what their wishes are for their horses, in the event the owner passes away. Without clear instructions, horses may be treated as mere property in the Estate, and liquidated.
Planning ahead now prevents the need for an emergency owner surrender of a horse later on.
